Welcome to Charlotte Curling.com!

Curling…Really?

If your only exposure to curling has been through watching it during the Olympics, you probably wondered what the heck they were doing. Why the sweeping, for that matter why is this even a sport? I assure you that it is not nearly as easy as they make it look on TV. To be Olympic-worthy, as with any sport, requires a great deal of skill and practice. We aren’t looking to try out for the Olympics though. We just want to have some fun and if we get a decent workout while we’re at it, well that’s a bonus.

Curling is for all ages – 9 to 99 and everywhere in between. Jay and I became interested in curling when we were looking for something we could do together. Some think of it as chess on ice. There is a great deal of strategy involved so that’s a fair comparison.

I have had an interest in curling during the last few winter olympics and was pleasantly surprised to see that you are trying to set up a club in Charlotte. I am curious as to the details of becoming a member. It looks like awesome fun.

Thanks for the comments Vince! You’re right – it is awesome fun!

Right now, we are still working out the details on official club membership. For now, its as simple as saying you want to be a member. We need 5 more members to apply for ‘paper club’ status to be officially recognized through the Grand National Curling Club (GNCC) organization. In the mean time though, we are working to organize our first Learn to Curl (LTC) event in the next month or so. Thats what really matters most so that we can get the word out and get more interest. We hope to have a date finalized with a local ice house in the next few weeks. We’ll likely have our sister club from Raleigh join us to help with the instruction.

On that note, we are planning to make a trip to Raleigh on both Thursday Feb 4th and Friday March 5th for their LTC nights. If you are interested in joining us for a road trip, just let us know. We’d love to have you (and any of your friends) join us.

Thanks again for reaching out! -Jay & Ronda

Count us in! Growing up in a scottish family in upstate NY witg ties in Canada I curled a few times as a youth. Is there a rink that has curling here in Charlotte now??

You can count on me to become a member. My parent’s life centered around curling when I was growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, and I was quite good at it myself back then. Aside from the food, curling was something I truly missed when I moved away from the area. Curling is, and always will be in my blood and like riding a bike, I doubt it will take long to get back into the swing of things!

I am looking forward to curling in Charlotte. I curled for 5 years in Utica New York. I have been down here for 15 years and can’t wait to curl again.

I’d love to try curling again! I only curled for one season when I was 12 in Wisconsin before we moved south.

I am interested in learning more about curling and becoming a member of the club. If only I had I checked this site before making plans for tomorrow, I then would be able to attend tomorrows event at Fox and Hound.

Thank you All for your posts! It looks like there is a variety of experience levels here. And yes – I bet it is like riding a bike. Stay tuned here for more information on our first Learn To Curl. We are waiting on our rocks to arrive, but as soon as they do, we’re going to get them (and YOU) out on the ice.

I’m so excited to hear that there will be curling in Charlotte!! My husband and I curled on mixed/ladies/mens teams in Wilmette, IL. and Minneapolis, MN. years ago. When we moved here, we went back to Minneapolis once a year for the Winter Festival Bonspiel for several years – but have missed it ever since. Definitely interested!!

Would love to learn more about your plans for the club. My parents used to be active curlers in the Philadelphia area for many years and loved it!!

Thank you so much for your comments! I can’t believe all this experience and interest! Since you left your comments, I have posted an update to the site with many more details. I hope you’ll get a chance to check that out. I can’t wait to see you all on the ice!

Like many others, I have become fascinated with curling while watching most recently from Vancouver. If you ever set up a “beginng curlers” event, kindly let me know. Charlotte is only an hour and 1/2 from Mt. Airy and it would be worth the trip to give curling a try.
    Thanks in advance,

I too am anxious to see some curling activity here in the Queen City. I was an active curler up until Feb 2009, when I moved full time to Charlotte. I curl out of the Detroit Curling Club. I have both Ladies and Mixed experience and have been fortunate to have gone to Hot Shots Fantasy Curling Camp in Toronto. It sounds like we may be close to a paper club, but come on let’s get some ice!!!!

Please contact me, I have a lot of friends back in Detroit who have a lot of experience and know how on what it takes to get a couple of sheets built. Our current club was opened in 2001.

    Good Curling,

    Stacie Pinnavaia
